I am a big ally to the LGBTQIA+ community and how support of the community is important. But we are all just more than our sexual orientation or as she puts it “her people”, which sounds like gatekeeping language to me. I know many who would put being a spouse, job, parent, advocate first in the community as descriptors before LGBTQUIA+. As well, just because they don’t have the same values because of religious belief is being hypocritical. That is Candace’s choice. It would be great if everyone accepted everyone no matter who they chose to love, but with diversity comes inequality/inequity. As sad as it is, or as corrupt the world could come, a utopian world is not plausible. There are many religions that are anti LGBTQIA+, which is Candace’s right as Jojo being a lesbian is. My younger brother is a Catholic priest who is LGBTQUIA+ accepting, and believes in they should have equal rights, but knows, if he did a legal marriage under the church’s name (he has done marriages not sanctioned by the church with generic Christian blessings as there are many accepting of the community). He would be ex-communicated if he did it under the Catholic Church. Just as I’m an MD and if I did/ordered a procedure against a client’s will (ex: giving a known Jehova’s Witness a blood or organ transplant against their will, because I think it’s the right thing to do, that 1) I could be fired for doing a procedure without the patient’s consent/authorization and 2) by doing so is criminal and I could go to jail for assault and battery. I have to respect my patient’s wishes and rights, no matter what I feel is right for them, period. I cannot force people to do things, they don’t consent or believe in. Same with DNRs even, if that is a patient’s decision to make, not mine,or their Power of Attorney or Next of Kin when they can’t speak for themselves. If there isn’t an objection, POA or NOK, them I’m clear to go as far as I can
